Any Given Sunday
Roommate M and I decided today that the weather was too nice, and the city too inviting for us not to get out and see what we could do. After some brief arguing that basically consisted of "Museum?" "No." "Movie?" "No." I looked at the street fair guide and found that there was one on 3rd avenue, just north of the village. It was the perfect choice, so we set off.
As anyone who has lived in NYC will tell you street fairs are pretty predictable. They are basically the same series of vendors who simply move about the city on the weekends setting up shop and selling their flea market goods, and fatty junk food treats.
And it's great.
I think the predictability and comfort of it are part of the appeal to me. I always know I can get a mozzarepa, and lemonade. I can be assured of some sausage and peppers if I so wish, and usually a smoothie. I can always look at some tibetan wool sweaters, cheap sunglasses and sheets, and most of the time some crafty art. It's like a moving mall.
What it also provides is a nice walk in the spring sunshine, the chance to laugh at people dressed like their dogs, and some seriously questionable fashion choices. In short... I love street fairs.
Afterwards we hit St. Marks Comics, Toy Tokyo and several other vintage shops in the village area and I came away with a new obsession: the Bandai toys gashopon figure of Phoenix, (who in case you didn't know is my favorite comic character). Gashopon are a Japanese style of toy that is a cross between an action figure and a model. The toy comes in several pre-painted pieces that you assemble into a small model, about 3 or 4 inches tall. The Phoenix figure features her in her classic green outfit, complete with flaming bird base, and a smaller flaming bird in her hands. (You can sort of see it here.) Rest assured that I WILL own this item in the near future, I'm just trying to figure out how to get it without plunking down for the whole 6 figure set!
