Riding on the subways reminds me of how many unhappy people there are in the world.
I get that comment a lot, but I don't think they are unhappy, just... neutral. People withdraw, and go into thought while they ride, especially if they are alone.
Don't you find that it spooks people if you smile at them when they are on the subway. I live in a small city compared to New York but found when I was in London on the subway if I smiled at people they really were not sure what to do with that. It was quite funny really.
